Title
A Seven-Cent Lodging House in the Bowery
Subject
The Bowery, New York City, lodging houses, poor/homeless persons
Description
Lodging houses were commonplace establishments in late 19th century New York City. There were different lodging houses categorized by price in cents- the higher the number of cents, the better the quality of the lodging house. A seven-cent lodging house, therefore, was deemed squalid and unsatisfactory yet had to be patronized by young boys and other people who came to the city to find work and had only a few cents in their pockets.
