The following illustration by W.H. Drake depicts a barracks situated between Mott Street and Elizabeth Street in late 19th century New York. The tenement house that was the focus of this image was inhabited by one hundred families that represented twenty different nationalities. It provided its inhabitants with a sense of strength and security with its iron stairs, broad, flagged corridors, solid walls, and ceilings arched on iron girders.
